Situated to the north of the capital very famous trekking trail Langtang is the less visited by the tourists. Making a trek here somewhat more of an adventure. Here the high alpine scenery, with mountains visible from their base to their peaks. A trek up to the Langtang Valley has to be one of the most rewarding of the short trek available anywhere in Nepal. Langtang Trek starts after a day bus journey to Syabrubeshi and follows the Langtang Khola. Initially the trail passes through cultivated fields and grassy slopes, forests of rhododendron, bamboo and oak below to the Langtang village. Unfortunately, this langtang also hardest hit by earthquake 2015, entire village was destroyed by landslides in the Langtang valley. But still the trail is very nice  and interesting. From Kyangin Gompa, the day trip to Tsergo Ri gives splendid views of peaks of Langtang, Jugal Himal and Langtang Lirung and Dorje Lakpa. This may also call Langtang Panorama View Trek.

After Langtang Valley Trek, the route follows to Gosainkunda where it has several sacred lakes, one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations for Hindu devotees. Gosainkunda is actually the largest among of three main lakes, the other two being the Saraswatikund and Bhairabkunda and more. Hindu legend has it that the lake was formed when the god Shiva plunged his trident (Trisul) into the ground in order to obtain water. Along this section of trail there are impressive views of the mountains including the Manaslu, Ganesh and Langtang Himal ranges. Add to this glacial lakes, rhododendron forests, native flora and fauna, magnificent mountains, forest, animal, birds, monasteries all go to make this region a perfect destination.

Essential Information

Overview of the Langtang – Gosaikunda Trek

The Langtang – Gosaikunda journey combines the lush Langtang Valley with the sacred alpine lakes of Gosaikunda, making it one of Nepal’s most satisfying moderate journeys. Starting from Syabrubesi, the route follows the Langtang River upstream into the Langtang Valley, passing through rhododendron timbers and Tamang townlets. After exploring Kyanjin Gompa, the journey ascends towards the holy Gosaikunda Lakes at 4,380 m, deified by both Hindus and Buddhists. Pedestrians are awarded with stunning views of Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, and indeed distant peaks in Tibet.

Stylish Time to Trek

The stylish ages for this journey are spring( March – May) and afterlife( September – November). During spring, the timbers bloom with rhododendrons, and temperatures are moderate. Afterlife provides clear skies and excellent mountain visibility. Winter( December – February) is also possible, but snow near the lakes and Laurebina Pass( 4,610 m) can make the route challenging. Thunderstorm( June – August) offers smaller crowds and lush verdure, but trails can be slippery and bloodsucker-prone.

Cultural and Scenic Highlights

The Langtang – Gosaikunda journey is rich in both nature and culture. The Langtang Valley is home to the Tamang people with Tibetan Buddhist traditions. You’ll pass by prayer flags, chortens, and cloisters, including the notorious Kyanjin Gompa, where you can also hike to Tserko Ri( 4,984 m) for panoramic views. The Gosaikunda region is inversely special — pilgrims visit the sacred lakes during Janai Purnima( July/ August) to bathe in the holy waters. Along the way, pedestrians enjoy different geographies from thick timbers to alpine meadows and glacial moraines.

Accommodation and Food

The journey is completely supported by teahouses offering introductory apartments and traditional refections. You can anticipate dal bhat, polls, mists, flapjacks, Tibetan chuck , and hot drinks. The advanced you go, the more limited and precious food becomes due to transportation challenges. Hot showers and charging installations are available at some lodges for an redundant cost. Carrying snacks and a applicable bottle with water sanctification tablets is judicious.

Permits and Availability

For this journey, you need two permits:

  • Langtang National Park Entry Permit
  • TIMS( Pedestrians’ Information Management System) card

Both can be attained in Kathmandu. The journey generally begins with a 6 – 7 hour drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. After reaching Gosaikunda, you can either return the same way or continue over the Laurebina Pass into the Helambu region and ultimately drive back to Kathmandu from Melamchi or Dhunche.

Trek Difficulty and Preparation

This is a moderate journey, ideal for pedestrians with some previous hiking experience. diurnal walks are 5 – 7 hours on average. The main challenge is altitude, especially near Gosaikunda and Laurebina Pass, so proper adaptation at Kyanjin Gompa and again before the pass is essential. Good trekking shoes, warm layers, and rain gear are recommended. Physical medication with cardio and leg- strengthening exercises will enhance the experience.
