Manang is one of the biggest towns on the Annapurna Circuit. It is located north of the Annapurna Range in the Marsyangdi River Valley. In Manang, you will get many services and budget-friendly and mid-range luxury accommodations.
Most trekkers take an acclimatization break in Manang and go on a side hike to places like Ice Lake (Kicho Tal), Gangapurna Glacier Lake, Milarepa's Cave, Praken Gompa, or Braga village.
Tilicho Lake
Tilicho Lake is one of the highest lakes in the world, situated at 4,919 meters above sea level. The lake has no aquatic life and is considered sacred by the locals.
The glistening turquoise-blue color of the lake, surrounded by alpine vegetation and snow-capped mountains, is a blissful view for our eyes. The insane beauty of this lake attracts many travelers from around the world every year.
The vast meadows of Yak Kharka
Yak Kharka is where you will leave the treeline behind and trek in the alpine zone. Kharka means alpine pasture in Nepali. As it is mostly used for Yak grazing, the name of this area ended up with Yak Kharka.
Surrounded by barren peaks and snowy mountains, the vast meadows offer soothing, peaceful scenery. The village itself is small, and you can see many yaks around the area.
Thorong La Pass
Thorong La, or Thorung La, is the highest mountain pass in Nepal, with an elevation of 5,416 meters. It connects the Annapurna region with Lower Mustang (Manang village in the east with Mukinath Temple in the west).
Thorong La is also the highest point on the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake. Crossing the pass from east to west is easiest and safest. However, the route from west to east is very challenging and does not allow ample time for acclimatization.
Muktinath Temple
Muktinath Temple is a pilgrimage site in the Himalayas. It is the temple of liberation. For Hindus, the Muktinath Temple is the home of lord Vishnu, and for Buddhists, this temple is home to the deity Avalokiteśvara.

Kali Gandaki Gorge

The Kali Gandaki Gorge separates Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mt. Annapurna. The gorge is famous for Shaligram fossils. Back in the day, the Kali Gandaki Gorge was one of the major trade routes between India and Tibet.
The Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake route
You will start the Annapurna Circuit trek with Tilicho Lake from Kathmandu. On the first day of the trip, you will drive to Chame. It will be a long drive but very scenic. The first few hours of the ride are smooth.
From Dumre to Besishar, you will experience around two hours of bumpy ride. In Besishar, you will change the vehicle and use a mountain-friendly four-wheeler to drive to Chame. Chame is the starting point of our trek.
From Chame, you will hike to Upper Pisang. On the way, you will come across a 1,500-meter-tall Paungda Danda Rock. The trail then continues along the Marsyangdi River and descends to the Manang Valley Floor.
From here, an uphill route will take you to Upper Pisang. Leaving Upper Pisang, you will ascend to Manang village, spending a night in Ngawal on the way. This part of the trail is very beautiful and offers stunning mountain views.
Manang onwards, you will follow a separate route and hike to Siri Kharka via Khangsar. The trail is steep and involves landslide-prone areas. From Siri Kharka, you will climb to Tilicho Base Camp and visit Tilicho Lake the next morning.
The turquoise-blue color of the lake and the scenery around it is unbelievable. Explore the lake and descend to Siri Kharka on the same day. Now, you will rejoin the Annapurna Circuit route and continue trekking towards Thorong La Pass.
On the way, you will spend a night at Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi. In this part of the route, the trail comes out of Marsyangdi River Valley and enters Jarsang Khola Valley. You will trek on vast alpine pastures and follow narrow, steep trails.
Thorong Phedi is the last settlement (more like a resting point for trekkers before Thorong La Pass. Some trekkers also prefer to spend a night at Thorong High Camp. From the Thorong Phedi, you will ascend to the top of the Thorong La Pass.
Crossing the pass is challenging because of a long, sharp ascend and erratic weather above 5,000 meters. From the top of the pass, you will witness a surreal mountain panorama.
The trail then descends to Muktinath Temple, where the trek ends. You will walk on loose rocks and cross a landslide debris area. Many trekkers walk from Muktinath Temple to Jomsom and take a flight from Jomsom to Pokhara.
However, we will be driving back to Kathmandu from Muktinath. It will be another long but very scenic drive. In the first few hours, the roads are bumpy. The guide will drop you at the hotel upon reaching Kathmandu.
