The Upper Mustang Trek is one of the most rewarding trekking experiences in Nepal, offering a journey into a remote, mystical region beyond the Himalayas. Known for its unique Tibetan-influenced culture, Upper Mustang is filled with dramatic landscapes, from arid desert plains to snow-capped peaks, glaciers, rivers, and waterfalls. Trekkers will encounter spectacular mountain views, traditional villages, and the vibrant heritage of the legendary Thakali traders. This trek is suited for those seeking a more challenging experience, but prior trekking experience isn’t necessary—just a good level of physical fitness and the ability to walk 4-6 hours daily.
Situated in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges in western Nepal, Mustang remains one of Nepal’s best-preserved regions. Trekking here requires a special permit, and trekkers must travel in a group of at least two people; solo trekking is not permitted beyond Kagbeni. The trek typically follows the route from Jomsom to Lo Manthang, the ancient walled city of the "Forbidden Kingdom."
